Abstract

Through appropriate poetry on theology, children can take steps toward a proper understanding of God. Such understanding may lead to better religious practice in later stages of life. This study examines poetry written for children's religious education, specifically on theology, over three decades (1991–2021). By comparing the poetic approaches with proper religious educational methods, this research highlights how most poets have drawn on personal experiences in depicting theology, rather than exploring new or appropriate pedagogical approaches. Findings reveal that innate human nature (fitra) and nature as signs of God are the dominant themes in these poems. Only a few works demonstrate incorrect theological expressions. Most children's poets focus on emotional and heartfelt depictions of God rather than structured theological instruction. The insights from this research can aid in evaluating and refining the teaching of divine concepts to children. Poets may reassess their works by comparing them with expert-recommended religious education methods, thereby making theological education both enjoyable and meaningful for children.
