The research was conducted with the aim of a comparative analysis of the concept of spirituality from the viewpoints of Ian Mathews and Martyr Motahhari. The research method was qualitative content analysis and a comparative study of the texts of these two thinkers. The findings indicated that both views recognize spirituality as a necessary source for meaning, hope, resilience, and identity reconstruction in the process of social work, but they have fundamental differences in foundations and outcomes. Mathews, with a secular and psychological approach, views spirituality as an individual and trans-religious experience, whereas Motahhari roots it in divine nature (fitra) and links it to faith. This difference manifests in two types of application in practice: Mathews’ approach, using tools such as spiritual assessment and narrative therapy, although practical, has mostly short-term effects due to the lack of ultimate foundations. However, the approach based on Motahhari’s divine spirituality, relying on faith and ethical training, creates a sustainable motivation for life reconstruction. Consequently, this research suggests that integrating “cultural sensitivity and Mathews’ tools” with the “ultimate foundation of Motahhari’s divine spirituality” can provide a comprehensive and efficient framework for social work in the Islamic-Iranian context, simultaneously responding to psycho-social and spiritual-religious needs, thereby increasing the effectiveness of services.
